About the course
The Living Heritage Studio is CUT’s interdisciplinary challenge semester. Students from different departments and EUt+ universities work in teams of 5–6 on one real project: the next 100 years of the Omeriye complex in the old town of Nicosia, a 14th-century Augustinian monastery that became a mosque in 1571 and is still a living place of worship.
Teams document and digitise the monument, design its interpretation and reuse, and develop a sustainability and business plan. They do this in a studio format with weekly critiques, three mentors, masterclasses when the project needs them and a field school at the monument. The semester ends with a public presentation to the people of the city.
The Challenge Studio is worth 15 ECTS. It is taken together with the Venture Block (EUT_107, 5 ECTS) and 10 ECTS of departmental courses, for a full 30 ECTS semester that counts toward the student’s degree.
