Academic Structure at Cyprus University of Technology (CUT)
At Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), the academic year is divided into two main semesters: the Fall semester and the Spring semester. Additionally, some courses may be offered during the summer period, typically in June and July. The detailed schedule and important dates for each academic year are available in the university’s academic calendar.
Structure of Studies
Undergraduate programs at CUT are designed to provide a balanced education that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application. Programs are typically structured to include:
- Foundation Courses: Early years focus on building a strong foundation in core concepts and essential knowledge across the discipline.
- Specialized Courses: Advanced courses in later years allow students to delve deeper into their specific fields of interest and expertise.
- Elective Options: Students may choose electives based on their academic goals and career aspirations, providing opportunities to personalize their educational experience.
This structure ensures that all students gain a comprehensive education, blending broad-based learning with opportunities for specialization in their chosen field.
Examinations and Assessment
CUT employs a diverse range of assessment methods to evaluate student performance, ensuring a holistic approach to learning. The assessment framework includes:
- Examinations: Both mid-term and final exams are conducted to assess students’ understanding of course material.
- Coursework: Assignments, projects, and practical exercises form an integral part of the assessment process.
- Presentations: Students may be required to present their work, demonstrating their ability to communicate effectively.
Each course utilizes at least two assessment methods, with the final exam contributing a maximum of 60% to the overall course grade. Detailed course outlines, including grading methods, are provided to students at the beginning of each semester.
Recognition of Courses
At Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), incoming Erasmus students and their home universities receive an official Transcript of Records at the end of the mobility period. This document includes all courses taken, the corresponding ECTS credits, and the grades achieved during the exchange. The transcript ensures the proper recognition of academic work completed at CUT by the home institution.
Grading Scale
The grading system at CUT is numeric, ranging from 0 to 10, rounded to the nearest half unit. The passing grade is 5. Below is the detailed grading scale:
Grade Point | Meaning | Greek Translation |
---|---|---|
9.5 – 10.0 | Excellent with Distinction | Άριστα με Διάκριση |
8.5 – 9.49 | Excellent | Άριστα |
6.5 – 8.49 | Very Good | Λίαν Καλώς |
5.0 – 6.49 | Good | Καλώς |
I | Incomplete | – |
P | Pass (non-marked course) | – |

Calculation of Semester Grade Point Average (GPA)
The Semester GPA is calculated as follows:
- For each course, multiply the number of ECTS credits by the numerical value of the ordinal grade to determine the Grade Points:
(Number of ECTS) X (Numerical Value of Grade) = Grade Points - Divide the sum of Grade Points by the sum of semester credits:
(Sum of Grade Points) / (Sum of Semester Credits) = Semester GPA
This calculation reflects the academic performance of students during the exchange semester.
